New Recruit Recognized in Hometown

 

Campbellsville wrestling recruit Aaron Smith has been named to the Atlanta Journal Constition Scholar Athlete Team. Coach James says, "Aaron is a great example of the type of athletes we are looking for in our wrestling program. He is very committed on the mat and committed to doing well academically."

The Wrestling Tigers now have 14 committments and a recruiting class that will bring 13 state championship titles with them to Campbellsville in the Fall!

 

Last year's recruiting class turned out to be a good one, but in comparison it only brought five state titles in. So, this class is shaping up to be a very strong recruiting class on paper.

Campbellsville, KY. -- The Campbellsville University wrestling team put a cap on the 2005-06 season with its 1st annual awards dinner on Saturday night. The 2nd year program finished 6-5 in dual meets, placed fourth at the East Region Tournament, sent twelve wrestlers to the NAIA National Tournament and finished the year with 3 All-Americans and a 14th place finish in the National Rankings.

Nationally Recognized Wrestler Signs with Campbellsville University

The Tigers won the recruiting battle for Rucker over Gardner-Webb, Tennessee-Chattanooga, Iowa Central and the University of the Cumberlands. In this recruiting class the Tigers have now have 9 committments and have signed 2 of Intermats top 250 recruits. Daniel is a big signing for us and we are excited about him joining us and watching him develop over the next few years. We feel like we are signing wrestlers that can become National Champions here at Campbellsville and Daniel is a recuit of that caliber. This recruiting class is shaping up to be another very solid one for us here at CU.

Background: Went 40-10 as an undersized freshmen at 103 placing 3rd in the region and finishing a match away from placing. Claimed his first State Championship at 103 as a sophomore going 61-4 Daniel also won the region and set the State Record for takedowns in a season.Daniel moved up to 112 as a junior going 66-3 winning the region and claiming his second straight title. Daniel broke the National Takedown record for most takedowns in a season finishing with 499.
What makes him a great recruit? The ability to score points on his feet, from the top and from the bottom make him a great wrestler. He is known for being great on his feet but he has won both state championship on top. He is very underrated in the top position. Daniel will be a great addition to any team with his work ethic and dedication to the sport. He should be able to maintain a college weight of 125 for all four years.

 National Tournament Results

Sioux City, Iowa.- The Campbellsville University wrestling team finished up the 2005/06 season with a 14th place showing at the NAIA National Tournament. The Tigers of Campbellsville qualified the maximum of 12 wrestlers for the tournament and had 7 wrestlers reach the All-American round. Kaci Payne at 133, Kyle Norred and Jairus Murton at 141 and Billy James at 149 all came within one match of reaching All-American status. The Tigers had 3 wrestlers earn All-American honors. David Clemens at 157, Chris Seta at 149 and Glen Jackson at 197 all finished in the top 8 and became the 2nd,3rd and 4th All-Americans in Campbellsville University wrestling History. Chris Seta found himself on the tough side of the bracket in the toughest weight class at the National Tournament. A weight class that featured 5 former National finalist. 

Tiger Wrestling Preparing for Next Year

After a strong 14th place showing at the National Tournament the CU Wrestling staff has announced the singing of 3 more High School standout wrestlers. Jacob Murton is a 3x state champ and 4 time state placer from KY. Patrick Driscoll is a state champ and 4x state placer from Virginia and Aaron Smith was 3rd in the Georgia 5a state tournament this year.

 

 

 NAIA East Regional Tournament

In only the second year of competition for the Campbellsville University wrestling program the Tigers have closed the gap on the nations best teams. Competing in the loaded East Regional Campbellsville finished 46 points ahead of # 11 ranked McKendree and only 12 points behind # 3 Cumberlands.

EdSouth Tournament Results

The Campbellsville University Tigers traveled to Jefferson City, TN for the EdSouth Tournament this weekend. The Tigers had 4 wrestlers make the finals and 3 others that placed in the top 4.

# 3 University of the Cumberlands wins the Duel over #16 Campbellsville University 28-10

Tigers look to be peaking at the right time with a win Friday night and 3 wins Saturday at the C-N Quad. Campbellsville started the day off with Anderson College and wrestled well enough to score a 25-11 victory over an Anderson Lineup that consisted of several High School standout wrestlers from the state of Georgia.

Tigers Dominate At Limestone

The Campbellsville University Tiger Wrestling team traveled to Gaffney, SC on Friday and wrestled an afternoon match against NCAA II Limestone College. Campbellsville was able to dominate the Saints of Limestone by a score of  28-15.

Campbellsville Wrestlers in Indianapolis and South Carolina

On January 21st the Tiger Wrestling team spread across the east as wrestlers traveled to compete in both Indianapolis and South Carolina.

Tigers Take On In-state Rival University of the Cumberlands 

The Tiger wrestlers were home on January 19th to take on in-state rival University of the Cumberlands. The Tigers tried to move the line up around and the tactic backfired as the University of the Cumberlands got on a roll and defeated the Tigers 36-4. 

Tigers Compete in 2006 National Duels

The Campbellsville Wrestlers traveled to Waterloo, Iowa, the home of Dan Gable, for the National Duels on January 14th and 15th. The Tiger wrestlers made the most of a bad draw at the duels. In the first match the Tigers drew the defending national champions and # 1 ranked Lindenwood.

Two Tiger Wrestlers Place at Midwest Classic

Competing at the 149 pound class for the first time this season Billy James wrestled well enough to take 7th place honors at the Midwest Classic. The other tiger wrestler to place at the tournament was John Chidester. John was not seeded and finished in 8th place. He had a win over the #7 seed Meade from SIUE who had pinned John earlier in the year.

Overall the team competed hard and we had 6 wrestlers make it to the top 12 round with Billy and John winning to advance into the top 8.

Seta Competes in Midlands Tournament

 

Campbellsville University wrestler Chris Seta took advantage of the winter break to wrestle in the prestigious Midlands Tournament. Finishing in the top 12 of this competitive contest, Seta now leads the Tigers with a winning record of 17-5. Seta also moved to a number 4 national ranking.

Second Round Seta lost to the #4 seed Donald Lockette in overtime 4-2

Consolation second round he beat Brett Steadman of Iowa University 2-0

Conso third round was a 11-4 victory for Seta over the #4 ranked Division III wrestler Jason Brew

Conso fourth round was another victory for Seta. This time a 5-1 win over Rob Hitschler of Pennsylvania University

His last match was against Cal-State Bakersfields Anthony Baza. Baza is the #12 ranked wrestler in Division I and defeated Seta 7-0.

 

Campbellsville Wrestlers Compete in Simonson Invitational

 

The CU Tigers traveled to Ashland, Ohio this weekend to compete against 3 of the topped ranked teams in Division II. Ashland is a perennial power in the division II ranks and is ranked #13.  Mercyhurst and Gannon are both ranked in the top 20. Other teams competing on the day were Carson-Newman, Newberry, Southern Illinois Edwarsdville and  Ohio Northern.  Six CU wrestlers placed in the tournament.  That group includes: Kaci Payne 3rd at 133, Jessie Riggleman 4th at 141, Chris Seta 3rd at 149, Chris Branam 6th at 174, Josh Deadrick 6th at 184 and Glen Jackson 6th at 197. The performance by Kaci Payne was big as he had a victory over Sanders from Gannon who is ranked 6th in Division II at 133. The 3rd place finish by Payne also qualified him for the NAIA national tournament.

 

Coach Bricker Competes in Carolina Open

 

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Campbellsville University Wrestling team took a break from action and traveled home to be with family for Thanksgiving. However, Coach Andy Bricker chose to travel to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and enter the Carolina Open.

The North Carolina wrestling team hosted the 2005 Carolina Open in Woollen Gymnasium Saturday and had wrestlers from Virginia Tech, North Carolina, UNC-Greensboro, Duke, Gardner-Webb, UT-Chattanooga and several others compete.

Coach Bricker is a couple years removed from college and has not competed since. However, he has been training hard with the team and also gives many individual workouts at CU. His work ethic and years of experience paid off this weekend as he was able to capture the title at 125 pounds.

After a first round bye he defeated CJ Hamilton by a score of 5-0. He then defeated Richie Aplolina of his alma mater Campbell University 9-2. He then faced UNC wrestler Jared Royer in the semi finals and another UNC grappler Bobby Shaw in the finals. Bricker was able to defeat Shaw 11-7 to capture 1st place at the tournament.

Coach Bricker returns to coaching duties on December 3 when the Tigers travel to Ashland, Ohio for the Ashland Simonson Invitational.

Home Duel Against Carson-Newman

Campbellsville, KY - The 2005 Tiger Wrestling team kicked off the duel meet season with a home match against Carson-Newman this evening. In the first year of collegiate competition the Tigers split with the Nationally ranked Eagles with one win a piece. The Tigers expected to take the lead in that series here tonight and where well on their way after busting out to a 14-3 lead. The match began at 125 pounds.

 

6th Annual Missouri Open

 

Columbia, Missiouri - The Campbellsville wrestling team placed 4 wrestlers at the sixth annual Missouri Open Sunday in Columbia, Mo.  “This was a good tournament for us to compete in and our guys continue to grow up and meet each and every challenge head on” said head coach Franky James. “For us it doesn’t get much tougher than what we saw this weekend competing against teams like Oklahoma, Illinois, Edinboro, Missouri and several other big schools and some of the best small school wrestling programs in the country. We want to be the best NAIA program in the country and we just have to keep fighting and prove to people that we are on our way to the top.”

UNC Pembroke Open

PEMBROKE, NC - The Campbellsville University Tiger Wrestlers brought home 5 medals after a long weekend of wrestling action in the 25th annual University of North Carolina Pembroke Classic Tournament this past weekend. 

 

Campbellsville Wrestlers Impressive in Patriot Open

 

Campbellsville University opened the 2005-2006 wrestling season at the Patriot Open hosted by the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg , KY on Saturday, November 5th.  Over 200 wrestlers from nine colleges and universities competed in a grueling day of non-stop action.  The wrestlers weighed in at 8:00 am and finished wrestling sometime after 9:00 pm on Saturday night.

The Tigers competed in the tournament against wrestlers from the University of the Cumberlands (KY), Cumberland University (TN), Campbellsville University (KY), McKendree College (IL), UT-Chattanooga, Maryville College (TN), Georgia Tech University, and Carson-Newman College (TN).

2006-2007 Recruiting Season Underway

Signing with Campbellsville University is Patrick Driscoll, a State runner-up from Covington Virginia. Patrick will be a top contender for the Virginia state championship as a senior this year. "I am very happy that Patrick has decided to attend CU and join our program," says James. "Patrick loves to wrestle and has a good work-ethic. I have known Patrick for 3 or 4 years now and I think he will fit in well here at CU. I expect him to develop into a good college wrestler and have a great career here at CU."

2005-06 Tiger Wrestling Outlook

After finishing 9-4 in duels and 21st nationally in the first year of competition, the 2005-06 Campbellsville University Wrestling team will look to continue and build upon the strong foundation that is being laid for the program.
