Campbellsville University's first Head Wrestling Coach Franky James was born in Oklahoma in 1973. He graduated from Choctaw High School in 1992. James attended Carson-Newman College and received his B.A. in History in 1998. Coach James married Carrie Sexton and now has two young daughters, Madison Taylor, 5, and Macy Catherine, 1. The James' are expecting their third child in March of 2006.

Wrestling Background

In 1992, James was an Oklahoma all-state wrestler for Coach Benny Coleman at Choctaw High School. In college, James served as a captain on the 1993-94 NJCAA National Championship team and was national runner-up at 134 lbs for Garden City Community College in Garden City, Kansas. Coach James has also wrestled for Jack Spates and Mark Manning at Oklahoma University. At Carson-Newman, James was an 1998 All-American and worked as a graduate assistant under Hall of Fame coach Don Elia.

James started coaching at Carson-Newman and helped bring a top 5 nationally ranked recruiting class among non-division I schools. James has also helped coach two teams that finished in the top ten in the NCAA tournament.

Coach James then moved to UT-Chattanooga as Head Assistant and helped bring in a top 20 nationally ranked recruiting class. James then served as the Interim Head Coach at Chattanooga and guided the team to an undefeated season in the Southern Conference. James was named the conference “coach of the year.”

The Virginia Military Institute called James to assist with their program and in while there VMI won its

 its first ever All-Academy tournament title. Under James, VMI also won the Virginia intercollegiate state title for the first time.  While at VMI, Coach James had the pleasure of coaching two of the winningest wrestlers in school history, Adam Britt and Matt Erwin.

Franky James was hired to start the Campbellsville University Wrestling program in April of 2004 and is now entering the 3rd season as CU’s Head Coach.

Andy Bricker

Graduate Assistant Wrestling Coach

 

  

Andy Bricker will enter his second season as the Assistant Coach at Campbellsville University.  Bricker comes to CU after a short coaching stint at NCAA Division II Belmont Abbey in North Carolina.  Coach Bricker also served as an assistant for 1 year at Campbell University a NCAA Division 1 institution in NC.

 

Bricker is a native of Live Oak, FL, and graduated from Campbell University in 2004 with a degree in Physical Education.  During his four-year career at Campbell, he compiled 86 wins to rank eighth on the school’s all-time victories list. Bricker was also a Three-Time CAA All-Conference, finishing second in the conference in the 125-pound weight class as a freshman, and was twice named the team’s MVP (2001 & 2003).

 

Bricker completed his career at Suwannee High School with a career record of 122-3 and was a two-time state champion. He holds the schools record for career tournament titles with 17 and was named Most Outstanding Wrestler in the 1999 High School National Open.

Billy James

Student Assistant Wrestling Coach

 

Billy begins his first season as a member of the Tiger coaching staff after his career as a varsity member of the Tiger wrestling program. Billy will work with the new Tiger team members at practice and assist with individual workouts.  Billy was a member of the first Tiger Team in 2004 and was the first wrestler to commit to CU. He made sure that the program got off to a good start and completed two good years for the Tigers by becoming a 2X National Qualifier and the East Region Runner up in 2005. Billy will graduate from Campbellsville with a degree in Criminal Justice and pursue a career with the state police or a teaching and coaching career. Billy is a graduate of Choctaw High School in Choctaw, OK where he was a 2x state placer.
