Sophomore wrestler Zach Flake became Campbellsville's
first national champion inany sport by winning the 141-pound weight
class at the NAIA national tournament this past weekend in Sioux
City, Iowa. Flake beat Brad Cooper of Cumberlands 7-6 in the finals.
Overall, the third year wrestling program claimed
5 All-Americans and finished 7th as a team. Freshman Jacob Murton
shook off a surprising semifinal loss to come back and claim 3rd
place. Flake was the Champion at 141. Chris Seta knocked off the
defending national champion from lindenwood, but could only manage
a 4th place finish at a very tough 149 pound class. Sophomore David
Clemens major decisioned the # 1 ranked wrestler on his way to
the finals and finished as the runner up at 157. Sophomore Glen
Jackson ran into the # 1 ranked wrestler in the semifinals and
was not able to get the win to earn his first trip to the finals.
Glen finished 5th at 197.
"We had a good year and I'm very proud of
our team and the kind of people they are. We plan to build on this
season and keep moving forward." Our off-season program starts
next week and we have a lot of wrestlers that are motivated by
seeing Zach Flake become a National Champion this year. My challenge
is to keep this group of athletes working together towards graduation
and put another strong recruiting class on campus." |
