Tigers Compete Well at Wisconsin Open

The CU Tiger wrestling team had 12 wrestlers compete in the Wisconsin Open on Saturday at the University of Wisonsin Parkside in Kenosha Wisconsin. This young tiger team continues to look like a strong tournament team.

No team score was kept, but the tigers out performed teams in the tournament that had twice as many wrestlers competing. Freshman Johnny Papesh (Aurora, Ohio) took the silver at 125 pounds with a runner up finish. Papesh is now 10-3 on the year.

Johnny had a bye in the first round and then had 3 straight wins to reach the finals. He lost in the Finals to Zimmerman from Parkside by fall. Tommy Pretty continued his strong freshman campaign by finishing 4th in a very tough 133 pound bracket. Tommy leads Campbellsville in Pins on the year and added 3 more at the Wisconsin Open. Redshirt Freshman Ruben Perez (Tampa, Florida) saw his first action of the year at 141 pounds and showed that he will be a contender in the National Title chase at that weight. Ruben finished 2nd in the tournament and reached the finals by beating the # 1 seeded and # 3 ranked wrestler in the nation.

Ruben scored a 4-0 victory in that semi final match before dropping a decision in the finals. Senior Glen Jackson finished 6th at 197 pounds after losing an overtime match in the semi finals and then tumbling all the way to the 6th place spot.

James Linker, Matt David, Josh Ashbrook, Aaron Smith, Phillip Oudhuis and Daniel Rucker all competed well and continue to improve.
